![]() Even though the discourse in female representations in Disney films is more present than discussion around men, the gender stereotype, positive and negative, could be harmful for both gender. Gender stereotype is like a double-sided blade. Yet this idea of conventional family, which the father provide and mother nurture, still remains the ideal family. It is not strange to anyone that Disney has always been promoting family value. In this imbalanced relationship, the male provides social and financial security, in return, the female will marry her savior (in the name of love). The prince and Snow White are the ideal image which is also promoting the ideal heterosexual family value. In the scene, the prince is presented rich, white and well mannered. In the scene where Snow White and the prince reflects in the bottom of the well, confirms her appearance matches the ideal female representation, and her action, doing chores, prior to meeting the prince suggest her domesticated side is also attractive to the prince. In Snow White, a mirror is used to hint the ideal representations of female which both male and female desire. Like mirror stage which baby forms self consciousness through recognition in mirrors, ideology gives individual subjects identities which is a imagery misconception of who they really are. In Althusser’s Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses, he states that “Ideology represents the imaginary relationship of individuals to their real conditions of existence.”(53) This theory of ideology draws back to Lacan’s theory of mirror stage. The use of mirrors and reflections in both the stories speaks to the ideal representation of the ideal social image. Through the classic disney stories Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, I will unravel the construct of the male gender ideology and how it contributes to the gender imbalance which still exist today. ”(384) Facing many criticism, Disney has made many changes on the portrayal of female identity, while the representation of masculinity remains more or less the same. ![]() ![]() As Lieberman states, children “have absorbed far more from than merely the outlines of the various stories… learn behavioral and associational patterns, value system, and how to predict the consequences of specific acts or circumstances. Although it is unfair to say that Disney is at fault of perpetuating the harmful ender stereotypes, the mirroring and magnifying the gender ideology that was already present in the society has made a huge impact on the generations to come. This article discuss the ideal representations of male in the Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the presentation of the masculinity in the in the film is really problematic and could be reinforced to the young viewers. how the effectiveness of mirror creates the false illusion to the young viewers. Disney cartoons has proven to be the the most attracting and effective media which transmits the social value through catchy songs and pretty pictures.
